A Little Wander Around Tiong Bahru, Singapore

Tiong Bahru

Most Singaporeans are already privy to the surprisingly hip and refreshingly laid back suburb of Tiong Bahru, but I’d like to give this place the blog post it deserves, complete with a short photo essay detailing our exploration of the area. Known for being one of the oldest residential estates in Singapore, the quaint historical neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru has recently undergone a cultural rebirth thanks to an uncanny rise in the number of chic coffee joints, bakeries, cakeries and indie, vintage, and retro-inspired shops sprouting all over the place.

Wander around for a bit and you will encounter several trendy haunts doing well amid ramshackle shop houses and charming, age-worn HDB blocks. These include the famed 40 Hands, a café that serves one of the best cups of coffee in Singapore; Tiong Bahru Bakery, a delightful little artisan bakery opened in collaboration with celebrity baker Gontran Cherrier; and BooksActually, a wonderfully quirky independent bookstore.
