One thing I regret not doing much of during my 11 long years in Australia is paying the local markets frequent enough visits. The lack of attention and negligence on my behalf is something that I’m still kicking myself over to this day. However, I am proud to say that on my final weekend on the Gold Coast, when the summer heat gave not an ounce of respite and the mercury soared straight past 36°C, James and I decided to rock up to one the GC’s most beloved weekend markets: The Village Markets.
Held every first and third Sunday of the month at Burleigh Heads State School and every second Sunday at Paradise Point Park, this fantastic market offers you everything from quality handmade jewellery to eclectic beach house furniture, whimsically-scented artisan candles to boho chic leather bags dyed every colour under the sun. Oh, and let’s not forget about fantastic live performances by local musicians, good food, and refreshing drinks.
It’s a great market to visit when looking for gifts. I myself bought a new rose quartz and 14 karat gold plated sterling silver ring from local jewellery label, Violet Gray. Their lovely pieces, crafted using 925 sterling silver, gold, rose gold and authentic semi-precious stones, are both simple and stunning. I’d been eyeing their stuff online for ages and was very glad to have found their tent at the market.
But the highlight of the day for us was the golden performance by local music artist Mitch King. Seriously, check out his album, A Life Under the Sun. His music makes me want to go on long summer road trips around Australia, traversing the coast and watching the sun go down each day. As I’m writing this, I’m listening to Coming Back, which has a very edgy sound that you will definitely find hard not to fall in love with.
