Singapore’s River Safari 2015 – The Great Panda Wonderland!

Singapore River Safari

The biggest draw to the River Safari is the climate-controlled Giant Panda Forest exhibit, which features adorable red pandas (also known as “lesser panda” or “red cat-bear”) and majestic black-and-white giant pandas. In this day and age of rapid urbanisation, both species are extremely vulnerable to habitat loss due to deforestation. Fortunately, extensive conservation efforts are being made to ensure the survival of these rare creatures. Continue reading “Singapore’s River Safari 2015 – The Great Panda Wonderland!”

The Singapore Zoo 2015 – Oh, Those Cheeky Orangutans!

Singapore Zoo

I’ve accumulated a huge number of photographs from my last two excursions to the Singapore Zoo. From playful lemurs, otters and baby orangutans, to lazy sun bears, proboscis monkeys and giant tortoises, it brings me great pleasure to present to you a wide-ranging selection of the best images from the lot. Be sure to check out the blog post I did back in 2013 regarding this very zoo for even more animal pictures! Continue reading “The Singapore Zoo 2015 – Oh, Those Cheeky Orangutans!”

Jurong Bird Park @ Jurong Hill, Singapore

Jurong Bird Park

Singapore’s Jurong Bird Park is one of the island nation’s four wildlife reserve parks – the other three being the Singapore Zoo, the River Safari and the Night Safari. It is home to over 5000 birds across 400 species. From curious parrots to adorably chubby penguins, fearsome birds of prey to pygmy songbirds, the park is definitely not short of feathered creatures. Taronga Zoo @ Sydney, New South Wales

Crimson Finch

Taronga Zoo was on the list of places that I insisted we visit during our weekend stay in Sydney. You know me: as an avid photographer, I’d jump at any chance to spend a few (okay, many) hours in a place full of animals. And lucky us, the weather was absolutely gorgeous when we set out — frilly clouds against a stark blue sky, calm breezes without too much bite. As our hotel was located in the CBD, we figured the easiest way for us to get there was to catch a ferry from Circular Quay. It got us there in under 15 minutes.

Taronga Zoo

Situated on a hill along the shores of Sydney Harbour, Taronga Zoo’s elevated vantage point charmingly presents visitors with a lovely view of Sydney Cove, the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. The zoo itself spans approximately 21 hectares and is home to over 4,000 animals from over 350 species. We came across creatures big and small – from mega Asian elephants to tiny Gouldian finches. There was quite a bit to see. Needless to say, we were at the zoo from morning to sundown. The following images make up just a fraction of the overall potpourri of pictures we managed to snap.

Molly & Ralph {maltese x poodle puppies}

Maltese Poodle

Just some recent pictures of Molly and Ralph. They’re the new Moodle puppies currently residing at James’ house! They’re adorable when they play-fight, but not so much when they try to bite your toes! Molly is smaller than Ralph and she just loves crawling through the gaps in the fence that surrounds the swimming pool. She’s fallen into the water more than once for all her trouble, which is a headache for everyone. The sneaky little thing, always getting into trouble!

Falling in Love with Animals @ The Singapore Zoo

White Tiger

The Singapore Zoo is perhaps one of the most gorgeous zoos I’ve ever been to. In fact, the massive award-winning attraction has been known for having one of most beautiful wildlife park settings in the world, allowing animals to roam freely in open, naturalistic habitats. Despite the drizzly weather we had while venturing out into that wilderness, we still had an amazing time, craning our necks and shuffling around other tourists to get a closer look at the various critters housed in vast enclosures. When I say vast, I mean it. Some animals are even allowed to roam completely free around the zoo.

The grounds are almost ridiculously extensive, and wonderfully so. Along with all the different exhibits, there are animal petting corners, elephant and horse riding areas, restaurants, cafés, amphitheatres, fast food outlets, flower gardens, gift stores, ice cream parlours, tram stations, picnic sites, scenic lookouts and kid’s playgrounds scattered over 28 hectares of lush parkland. The ambitious zoo houses over 300 species of animals, of which at least 16% are considered threatened species. It attracts about 1.7 million visitors every year.

Spider Web Lily Pad

As we trekked through Cat Country, to the lands of Wild Africa, around the Australian Outback, through the Frozen Tundra, into the Fragile Forest, we saw many amazing animals. Big, small, dry, wet, bird, mammal, reptile, amphibian, insect… they have it all. Here is a small collection of pictures (in no particular order) that we took that I hope will give you the chance to sample the zoo through your computer screen at home. Enjoy!

Birdlife at the Singapore Botanic Gardens

Lesser Whistling Duck

After a lovely talk with a good friend of mine this afternoon (one whom I hadn’t seen in a ridiculous three or so years), I have been inspired to pursue what I am most passionate about: photography. Honestly, so much goes on in Singapore. The Gold Coast cannot quite compare to this vibrant little island city. There have been plenty of opportunities for photography here; it is a country that just has so much to offer, from wildlife to fashion to food to culture… the list is endless. James and I recently gallivanted the Singapore Botanic Gardens, where we witnessed a caucasian family feeding the birds and turtles at one of the lakes. The ducks here are different from the ones we get in Australia. They are absolutely adorable.

The Cat with the Beautiful Markings

The Cat with the Beautiful Markings

The fat cat on the mat
may seem to dream
of nice mice that suffice
for him, or cream;

The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings

but he free, maybe,
walks in thought
unbowed, proud, where loud
roared and fought

The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings

his kin, lean and slim,
or deep in den
in the East feasted on beasts
and tender men.

The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings

The giant lion with iron
claw in paw,
and huge ruthless tooth
in gory jaw;

The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings

the pard dark-starred,
fleet upon feet,
that oft soft from aloft
leaps upon his meat

The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings

where woods loom in gloom —
far now they be,
fierce and free,
and tamed is he;

The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings The Cat with the Beautiful Markings

but fat cat on the mat
kept as a pet
he does not forget.
